For our photographers and/or guests of Africa in Focus, we offer, in collaboration with Mukambi Safaris, an unique arrangement. In a week we will take you to three different lodges in completely different landscapes which will be good for a wide variation of sightings and photographs.

Our residence for the first and last night is at the main lodge, Mukambi Safari Lodge, located on the shores of the Kafue river. Besides spotting hippos and crocodiles, many birds could be seen and heard during our stay. Enjoy a beautiful view over the river during your meal or enjoy a moment for yourself at the swimming pool.

Thereafter, our next stay is at the Fig Tree Bush Camp, where 2 nights will be spent in a luxurious treehouse 3 meter above the ground. Fig tree offers a stay in the middle of wildlife and wilderness. From the main area, where we have breakfast, lunch and dinner, there is a view over the lagoon where animals regularly show up to drink water. Fig tree is located in an undiscovered part of Kafue NP where even wild dogs are active (painted wolves)

While Fig Tree is an unique and spectacular experience, our 3-night stay in the Busanga plains Camp is an unforgettable experience. Busanga plains is only opened 4 months a year and is the ultimate ‘remote’ experience in the wilderness. You will be spending your time here in complete peace secluded from the ‘real’ world. The area attracts loads of animals due to the peacefulness of the place. The animals will stay right in front of you while you are enjoying a drink or relax at the pool.

All three lodges have an authentic African design which would give you the most unique ‘bush’ experience. The luxurious tents are included with an own toilet and bathroom. The lodging is all-in and the meals that are offered are fresh and healthy. If you are interested in Astra-photography, Kafue is the place to be. The clear unpolluted sky will display the milky way like you have never seen before, this also gives the opportunity to photograph this endless spectacle.

The residences, Fig Tree and Busanga Plains, are exclusive for us. This means that there will be, apart from us, no other guests. This is pleasant for our stay but even more for us as photographers. The rangers and jeeps are completely exclusive for us! The rangers know how it is to be a photographer and will position themselves at a sighting on the right spot. We, as a group, decide how long we want to stay at a sighting. As a guest of Africa In Focus, we are together in control of our journey.

Mukambi Safaris is a company of Robyn and Edjan van der Heide. A Dutch couple that moved to Zambia in 2002 and started their unique journey. They took over the Mukambi lodge and started building towards sustainable tourism in Kafue NP. . The camps Fig Tree and Busanga Plains are built by themselves and offer an unique stay in the wilderness. In 2005/2006 a documentary is made about the life of Robyn and Edjan which was broadcasted on national TV in the Netherlands: ‘Van Amstelveen naar Zambia’. In 2017 an episode of ‘boer zoekt vrouw’ (farmer seeks wife) is filmed in Mukambi. You will experience the ultimate African wildlife experience with Dutch quality and hospitality.

Kafue NP (National Park) is one of the largest parks in Africa. Kafue is even larger than Serengeti and Kruger and covers, as a park, half of the surface of The Netherlands. Generally, it is flat with a few rolling mountains. Kafue NP is named to the river that meanders through the northern part of the park. The Kafue river is the biggest in Zambia and one of the most important rivers to supply the Zambezi.

The landscape in Kafue varies, there are parts with typical bush followed by grasslands. Busanga Plains, which is located in the north, is a vast marsh area that is only opened a couple of months a year. We will stay in the middle of the Busanga plains where we will be surrounded by elephants, lions and many other impressive animals. Staying in places like this is an adventure on its own since you are completely ‘remote’ and on your own in the middle of the African wilderness.

Kafue NP in brief:

  • Surface approx. 22.400km2
  • Bush, grasslands and swamps
  • Approx. 5-hour drive from airport Lusaka
  • Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo’s and many antelope throughout the whole park
  • Hippos and crocodiles in and near the Kafue river
  • More than 500 bird species
  • Unfortunately there are no rhino’s and giraffes in Kafue NP
  • Quiet due to the large area
  • Most sightings will be exclusive for us since there are not many tourists in this national park

Zambia is a large country on the southeast coast of the African continent. Till 1964 it was known as North-Rhodesia. The capital Lusaka has a well-known international airport and for most other airports easily accessible. If not, Nairobi, Kenia should be used as a stopover.

Zambia has approx. 17 million inhabitants and English is their native language. In 1964 North-Rhodesia got independent of the United Kingdom and named themselves, Zambia. The political and economical situation is stable even though the inhabitants have origins in different tribes.

The country is located on a plateau of approximately 1300 meter. The climate is characteristic for African countries and has a dry and a wet season. During the wet season, October till march, the most rain will fall in November, December and January. In July, when we will be staying in Zambia, there is no rain and is it cool and dry. The temperature during our stay will vary between 25 and 30 degrees.

There is not a lot of tourism in Zambia. The most visited spot is the Zambezi river which ends in the Victoria waterfalls in the south of Zambia. Furthermore, national parks such as lower Zambezi and South Luangwa are popular among the tourist. While most tourist will choose for these parks, Africa in Focus chooses for a quieter location, Kafue NP.
