Our trip goes to Akagera NP, which is located in the east of Rwanda where it borders Tanzania. Akagera is a beautiful nature reserve recognised by his rolling hills and stunning lakes. The north of the park has flat savannas and swamps. Akagera is a BIG-5 destination. However, it also offers a huge variation of other wildlife which makes this area a must visit. The lakes and swamps attract many bird species. In Akagera there are more than 550 different species with as ‘big leader’ the African Fish Eagle that could be seen and heard regularly.

Especially in the north you could see elephants, buffalo’s, masai giraffes, zebra’s and many species of impalas. Black Rhino’s, lions, hyena’s and leopards are harder to spot and is not a guarantee like it is in Kruger Park. However, if you spot one of these animals they will not be surrounded by a large number of jeeps within seconds. Akagera is a quiet area which offers wildlife at his finest. Our bush camp in the north is a simple but functional tented camp which is located on the hills that surrounds the area which is named Kirara plains. Many colorful butterflies will fly around while you are enjoying the breathtaking view of the area where wild animals wander around.

Fotoreis Africa,Rwanda,Akagera NP,birdsThe south of the Akagera is partly formed by the enormous lake Ihema. Our camp will be located at the shores of this magnificent lake, where we will be staying the other half of the trip in the Ruzizi Game Lodge. Enjoy a delicious meal on the wooden platform whilst listening to the sounds and appearances of many birds, hippo’s and monkeys. Every sunrise during your early breakfast will be an amazing experience.

During our stay at the Ihema lake we will do several boat trips to explore the waters. The waters are full of birds and enormous Nile crocodiles which are located at the shores of the lake. The lake has the largest population hippos in Africa and you are more than likely to see one of them from nearby. From the lodge we will have several game drives since there are a lot more animals to spot in the surrounding bush.

ABesides the variation of animals, Akagera has a lot more to offer. The combination of plains, swamps, hills and lakes will form a beautiful landscape which is even more spectacular by mist during the sunrise.

Ruzizi tented lodge and Karenga Bush camp are accommodations managed by African Parks. Delicious meals will be served whilst enjoying the amazing views of Akagera. In Ruzizi you’ll spend the night in a luxurious tent with bathroom and toilet on a platform directly located next to the lake. with bathroom and toilet on a platform directly located next to the lake. You will enjoy the sunrise while eating your breakfast on a platform above het lake.

Karenge Bush camp is simple but has everything you need. The night will be spent in simple tents with 2 separate beds and the toilet and shower are outside but completely covered by bamboo. During the night you could hear the hyena’s crying and if you are lucky even the roars of the lions. The diner is made on a campfire while the photo’s and experiences of the day are shared with your fellow travelers.

A luxurious safari jeep picks you up from our hotel in Kigali, the jeep has 6 seats and will take us directly to Akagera. We travel with a maximum of 3 – 4 guests in one jeep to have enough space to make photos during our trip. The driver is our guide and has many years of experience. In Akagera during the game drives an African Park guide will join us on the trip but takes place in front next to the driver. Photographs could be made from different perspectives, from the open roof and side windows.

A big thank you to African parks for photos of the accommodations!
